As an RVer, you are driving your vehicle for pleasure, but you have also made an investment in the RV and the people in it. It is necessary to protect those people in the RV with you, those on the road around you, and to protect your investment as well.
With that said, here are some quick safety tips from the RV specialists at Dave Arbogast RV Depot in Troy, Ohio; we want to help keep you safe! You can also check out our RV blog for more helpful tips.
Make sure that every time you get into the drivers' seat that your mirrors are correctly adjusted and that your steering wheel is in a comfortable position.
They may have been accidentally nudged while parked, and trying to adjust any of this while driving is a major distraction and hazard. It is also a good idea to keep the music down for concentration purposes, especially while parking.
Make sure you have great visibility at all times.
Clean snow off of all windows and cameras, as well as defrost all windows and mirrors. While driving don't look strictly at the road in front of you, keep your eyes ahead and moving every few seconds. Constantly be aware of the environment around you, and use your mirrors. This will help your awareness and help you respond better in an emergency situation.
Never drive while fatigued.
Make sure that you get plenty of rest. While driving, make sure that you stop about every two hours to move around. Drink plenty of fluids and have snacks to keep your energy and focus up between meals. However, overeating may make you tired also, so be careful of that. If necessary, don't hesitate to make a driver change if you get too tired. If there isn't an alternate driver, give yourself a nap, so you can continue on safely.
Always be aware of emergency vehicles, using your mirrors constantly will help.
You are a large vehicle on the road, so it is important that you be aware and able to yield as quickly as you can to make way for them. Keeping music down inside your RV and encouraging passengers to wear headphones will help you to hear approaching sirens also.
Use common sense while driving, keep focused and alert.
If any of these things start to fail you, pull over and have a break. You life and the lives of those around you are too precious to risk because you thought you could keep driving, or could make it just a little further.
